Lower Back Pain

Potential Causes Of Low Back Pain

Some common contributors to the cause of low back pain can include poor posture, being either poor dynamic or stationary posture, weak core muscles and degenerative conditions.

Sciatica is a regular complaint treated at Illawarra Trigger Point Therapy Centre, sciatica is a set of symptoms caused by irritation or compression to the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in our body and is formed as the last three lumbar nerve roots and first two sacral nerve roots join together to make one large nerve, making its way through the pelvis and down the back of the leg to the foot.  Sciatic pain is typically felt in the lower back, buttocks and/or varying parts of the leg and foot, in addition to pain, numbness, pins and needles & tingling, muscular weakness may also be felt or noted in the lower extremities.  The name sciatica in itself does not give an indication of what is irritating the nerve, it is just a set of symptoms that suggest the nerve is being irritated.

Muscular tightness, irritation and imbalance sometimes stemming from prolonged poor sitting posture is a common problem with a lot of office workers, the resulting trigger points can compress and irritate the spine and spinal nerves and is a frequent cause of sciatica symptoms.

Trigger Points & Low Back Pain

There are many trigger points that can cause lower back pain and can even mimic sciatica symptoms, so much so that there is a trigger point known as the “sciatic” trigger point.  Another known as the “lumbago” (lumbar pain) point.  In fact research suggests that myofascial pain stemming from trigger points are a large component of all back pain conditions, even with the presence of arthritis, disc injuries or nerve compression syndromes.  Conditions such as piriformis syndrome are a major cause of sciatica, this important muscle (piriformis), when tight & harbouring trigger points, compresses the sciatic nerve from deep within the pelvis causing sciatica symptoms.  Further to this, trigger points within the deep spinal muscles can compress the spine, causing increased pressure and pain on spinal joints, discs and nerves.
