Fibromyalgia Treatment
FMS is a multi-faceted syndrome, more recent research has led to the increasing acceptance of the central sensitization theory as a major factor. This is where the central nervous system becomes "wound-up" to the point of hypersensitivity, causing widespread symptoms. Myofascial, (muscle and connective tissue) pain plays a significant role for many and can greatly contribute to this "wind-up" of our central nervous system.
Top Ten Fibromyalgia Symptoms
Pain all over
Fatigue
Sleep difficulties
Brain fog
Morning stiffness
Muscle knots, cramping, weakness
Digestive disorders
Headaches/migraines
Balance problems
Itchy/burning skin
Interestingly, the top ten symptoms above are also symptoms of many different myofascial trigger points. This is not to say they are the cause, but trigger point therapy can be a great aid in treating symptoms of FMS.
More than 90% of Patients Receive Significant Relief from Trigger Point Therapy treatment.
At Illawarra Trigger Point Therapy, I have found a two pronged approach to be the most effective way in treating the musculoskeletal component of FMS:
1. Treating the actual trigger points themselves, and
2. Decompressing the spine by releasing the deep para-spinal muscles, to reduce the possibility of compression irritability of the spinal cord, spinal nerve roots and spinal joints.
While NOT a cure, it usually leads to significant relief and subsequently has resulted in many referrals from GP's, Chiro's and Physio's.
While manual trigger point release can be very effective, Dry Needling, using thin filament single use sterile needles, has been found to be the most effective form of treatment.
